We, as members of the Al-Anon worldwide phone meetings, are writing to you in the hopes of obtaining a Toll Free conferencing line. As is listed by the WSO, we are currently using two phone lines provided by No Cost Conference.com (an outside enterprise). As of late, our “recovery” has been threatened due to our members individual phone carriers disallowing access to such lines. Some carriers have cancelled members phone plans, declined phone cards, etc. These members have had to go to extraordinary lengths in order to simply be able to attend a meeting. They have had to purchase more plans, phones, or lines. It is only a matter of time before all members will be affected across the board. We believe this to be an outside issue that only the WSO has the ability and the funds to address.
We equate the Al-Anon phone meetings to that of the Lone Member Service, only up to date with the technological age - as many of our members are disabled, home bound, hospitalized or in crisis of some kind. The deaf and blind community are also in attendance. The only difference is now these members can attend actual meetings and connect with the voices of other members. It has been a phenomenal tool for those of us that otherwise wouldn’t have meetings at all.
To date we have forty-three meetings registered, or in the process of being registered, with the WSO. Our meetings range from beginner to more in-depth topics to step, traditions, concepts, and speaker-in which the full unity of Al-Anon is expressed.
Many of our members are dialing internationally from all corners of the world - at all hours - as far away as China, Sweden, Germany, UK, Yugoslavia, and Australia, just to name a few. Not only showing the attraction but also the need for the phone meetings. Our meetings are highly attended. We’ve frequently had more than one hundred people at a single meeting - and growing stronger everyday. The fellowship following the meetings often lasts until the next scheduled meeting.
We graciously invite you to attend any one of our many phone meetings. Please find attached schedule. Thank you in advance for your time in consideration of our request. We would like to see the matter of the Toll Free Conference number appear on the agenda for the WSC in April 2011.
Additionally, we are requesting that a permanent voice be established at the WSC each year on behalf of the Al-Anon phone meetings, though we recognize this is a separate issue.
